Latvia - Russia I

From the tripoint EE-RU-LV to the border crossing Brunishevo - Pededze was only a few kilometers. In between I took a small road in the woods to follow the border for a short distance. Then I visited the border crossing. They said they already expected me.

III-1 20140407 Wooden shed
Between the tripoint and the border crossing I took a small road which ended at this shed near the border. Again no one was home. The left part of the shed was filled with wood. I guess for the woodstove in winter. At the left you can recognize the border markers 625.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 625
A clear sign that you have to stop here..
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 625
Strange enough there are two Latvian species of this borderpole. It could be that the border makes a special angle here, but it was not clear to me. Some hundred meters ahead I heard noice of chainsaws. Could have been on this side of the border. To avoid troubles I didn't go that way.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 626
I went to the left in the direction of the tripoint. Soon I reached the pair 626. There was a very small path along the border. I didn't if I Was allowed to take it as it was realy close to the borderline, but nothing happened. It was full of traces of the border guards' boots.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 627
Nothing new here. The strip between Latvia and Russia was not blank. On the contrary, it was full of plants. I think it's not easy to keep it empty.
III-1 20140407 Near borderpoles 627
A view at the borderline. At the left a little creek that forms the border from 627 in western direction.
Notice the wooden stick in the sand. I think this marks the 'protected zone' of 10 or 12 meter which is only accessable for border inspection. It's not clearly marked yet, but by chopping trees between the border and these sticks they are working on it.
I found more of those sticks here.
III-1 20140407 Border crossing Brunishevo - Pededze
I drove to the bordercrossing Brunishevo - Pededze. It looks all new, paid by EU funds. There wwas not much activity around here. One car waiting, that's it. In the earlier days it was only opened for pedestrians.
III-1 20140407 Office
I went to the office and was welcomed by some border guards. One of them spoke English. I asked if I could go to the border. I showed him my permission. He said they were already expecting me, I don't know why. They were friendly and it was no problem to go to the borderpoles -but not on my own! This young man escorted me.
III-1 20140407 X-ray
Between the 'gate' and the real border there is this X-ray device. You see that ofter at these borders.
III-1 20140407 Bordermarkers 603
A small and sandy road leads to the Russian custom office. The border guard told that this border crossing is now accessable for cars. In the earlier days it was not, but it was required by EU regulation. At the other hand, this borde crossing is only for Russian and Latvian people. "We would let you go, but the Russian will send you back, even if you have a visa" he said.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 602
An old barier on the border. It was used in the earliers day, now it has no function.
At the end of the road you see the office of the Russian customs. I couldn't get closer to the border than this. "The Russians could see it as a provocation if you are too close to the border", my guide said.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 603
A close look at the Latvian borderpole 603 at the left side of the small sand road. The Russian copy was standing quite far from this one. I think about 20 meters, which is much more than the usual 4 meters.
III-1 20140407 Russian custom office
With my zoomlens I could picture the poor-looking Russian custom office. Some people were waiting to cross.
I went back and thanked the border guard you joined me.
III-1 20140407 Near borerpoles 611
Before travelling to Vientuli, I visited another spot in the area on my own. It was only some hundreds of meters from the Brunishevo - Pededze crossing. Here the strip was properly maintained and visible.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 611 with bench
Due to the high vegetation the borderpoles were barely visible. Notice the bench close to the strip. Propably used to guard the border.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 612
With some effort I could reach and picture the pair 612. I tried 611 as well, but that was not possible. Too high and too much vegetation.
III-1 20140407 The road to Ventuli
On my way to the next border crossing, Vientuli. It was hot, almost all roads were small and dusty sandroads. If someone is driving in front of you, it's better to take a break and to wait until the dust has disappeared.
