Vientuli Area
From XXX to the bordercrossing Vientuli - ??? was about 50 kilometers. It was still very hot.
The visit to this border crossing was a bit disappointing. It was the first 'nix foto border' of this trip. |
Pierobezad Josla Some kilometers from the border, the borderland-regime starts. It's announced with these huge signs. |

Nix Photo The road and the border crossing on the Latvian side are still rather poor and small. I went to the small office to ask if I could get some closer to the border. The two surly ladies sent me away although I showed them my permission. "This area is not mentioned on the permission", they simply stated. I was not allowed to get closer or to make any picture, although I saw the border markers some 50 meters ahead. I was thinking of Peter Hering: this was a 'nix photo border'. |
Storks After being sent away, I went a bit to the south. There was a small road not so far from the borderline. From quite a distance I could spot this pair 416, surrounded by storks. On the Russian side there is a small fence. |
border crossing XXX From here I also had a look at the border crossing Vientuli with the surly ladies. If you look well, you can recognize on the left of the bushes the Latvian border poles. At the right of the bushes there are the Russian poles. Here again the distance between the poles is rather long. |
Borderpoles 416 I went some closer to the border poles, the storks flew away. I couldn't notice why there is no sand strip here, the border seems to be 'green'. |
Small brigde The answer was easy, the border is formed by a creek. And there is a small bridge. Most probably the bridge is on Latvian side and not crossing the border. I didn't go closer to investigate that. |
In the woods I drove further to the south where the border crosses the wood. I parked at a dead ending path, mainly used by border guards I guess. There was a small and narrow path leading to the border. Close to the border the usual warning signs. Due to the bright sun the pictures look rather spotty. That is always the disadvantage of being here in summer. |
The strip Not so easy to determine the border here. There is a strip but it's barely maintained.I kept a safe distance to avoid trespassing. |
Borderpoles 404 After some carefull hiking, I reached the borderpoles 404. From here the edge of the wood follows the border. |
Borderpoles 405 Some hundred meters ahead the border makes a sharp angle. That gave me the possibility to take a picture of the Russian side of the Latvian border pole. |
Borderpoles 405 This picture I took from the wood on the Latvian side. |
Borderpoles 405 A last view of the border. The strip is badly maintained, the inspection path is really close to the border. I don't know if I was allowed to come that close to the border but no one noticed me. Still it was terribly hot and the horse flies didn't leave me alone. Time for me to go down towards Kārsava, where the P45 comes close to the border. |
