Map 0601-0610 #1 Here we have the strange situation of an Ukrainian road passing through Moldova. It enters Moldova at border marker 0609. It's the Ukrainian M15, which runs from Odessa via Reni to Romania. From Reni it runs as M15(UA), M3(MD) and DN2B(RO) to Giurgiulești (MD), Galați, Braila and Buzau in Romania: Near Giurgiulești there are two border crossings close to each other as it runs only 2.4 kilometer through Moldova. The distance between the 2 Moldova border stations in Giurgiulești is exact 2 kilometers Here in Palanca, it's a transit road since 2020?? without border formalities if you continue your travel within Ukraine. The road runs for 7.65 km through Moldova. It's however possible to leave the road at Palanca to enter Moldova via the border station Palanca - Maiaki - Udobnoe.

Border marker 0601 Still along the Dnjestr river. I could go here on my own. Again the territory of fishermen.
Border marker 0602 Most of the fishermen have professional fishing rods and other equipment to stay for several days. Tents, sunshades, cooking appliances, cool boxes with food and lots of cans with beer, large batteries to provide power for enlightenment, etc. The area looks like a camping place.

Border marker 0603 Same here.
Border marker 0604 This border marker is not so cloce to the water.
Border marker 0605 Again the territory of fishermen. I was guided here by the same Border Guard that took me to 0606 and 0607. This is the last part of the bank of the Dnjestr which is accessable.

Border crossing Palanca - Maiaki - Udobnoe (I) Just south of the bank of the Dnjestr there is an unique combined single border crossing station used by Moldovan and Ukrainian border police. So the UA border station is in Moldova which is rather unique in Eastern Europe. But of course it makes sense as you cannot enter Moldova anymore once passed this border station to Ukraine although you're still on Moldovan territory. Except when you have to go to the meander in the Dnjestr river to find border markers 0606 - 0608, like I did. On the left the Ukrainian transit road which you can leave and enter via the combined border crossing station. Picture: Poliția de Frontieră Moldova.

Border crossing Palanca - Maiaki - Udobnoe (II) Here I had to wait for a Border Guard to guide me to the border markers 0606 and 0607. It was very kind that the staff in Ştefan Vodă helped me so I could visit these border markers. They can only be reached by using the Ukrainian transit road and then take a small path leading to the river. That path is locked by a gate. My guide had the key so we could enter the area.
Border marker 0606 No more fishermen here as this part is not accessable. Some farmers have access as there are a few fields here.
Border marker 0607 We had to walk to this border marker as the path was too narrow for the Policeman's car. No further activities here. Due to the bright sunlight the number is poorly visible. From here we went back to the border station in Palanca. The next markers (0608-0609) I had already visited in April 2024, also under guidance of the Poliția de Frontieră.
Border marker 0608 On the narrow space between the Dnjestr river and the M15. The border leaves the river here. The place is permanently guarded by Ukrainian soldiers. To reach this place we were guided by an Border Guard of the Poliția de Frontieră during our April 2024 expedition as this is the only way to get here. This is the most eastern point of Moldova.
Border marker 0609 On the other side of the road. No border formalities here as this is the Ukrainian transit road through Moldova. At the right side of the road the border runs into and through a swamp.
Border marker 0610 The border goes in a straight line into the swampy area. Not easy to access this area as you have to cross the Ukrainian transit road which is not allowed. This was not the main problem but the Poliția de Frontieră didn't allow us to go there because it would be too swampy. A second attempt in summer 2024 was not successful either: too swampy to enter the area according to the Poliția de Frontieră. On the orto photo map however the border markers are visible. On the old map displaying the situation before the independency of 1992, the border runs over the red line. This was changed with the separation in 1992. |
