Latvia - Belarus, Šķaune

From the tripoint LV-RU-BY to the little village Šķaune was not that far, just 20 minutes. During my preparation of the tour I noticed that the LV-RU border comes rather close to the road here. That's why I chose to visit this small part of the LV-BY border. It wouldn't cost me that much time and this whole tour was a race against time.
I wanted to park just outside the small village Šķaune and from there take a path to the border to hike along for one hour.
After that I wanted to visit XXXX where the border reaches the river XXX. It was just on my way to the tripoint LV-BY-LT.
But what had happened many times before happened again here: where I parked my car seemed to be the office of the local border guard service. There is only one thing you can do, go inside with a big smile with the permission and explain the border guards what you want to do...
Again it took me here more than half an hour before it was arranged. And of course a border guard joined and guided me on my hike to the border.

III-1 20140407 Office Nodola
THe office where I parked the car. I remember it was still very hot that day. My car is the one on the right, full of dust and dirt of all the sandy roads here. I spent half an hour in the office. Although I had a permission, it was not so easy to get access to the border zone. After many phone calls it was permitted. A border guard escorted me. I presumed he was not font of being from the office for one hour in this heath. So I kept the border visit rather short.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 027
From the office we crossed the street. We reached the border over a small path after 50 meters yet. There I found this border pair 027.
III-1 20140407 Duckboards
The border crosses a little swampy area. The inspection path runs over duckboards. On the left you see a glimp of my border guard.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 028
This one is even closer to the road. You can find some pictures of these bordermarkers on Panoramio for example.
Here the borders makes an angle to a small creek.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 029
The last markers I visited with the border guard. The Belarusian pole is on the other side of the creek.
We walked back to the office and I thanked the border guard for joining me.
Where to go now?
III-1 20140407 Meadows
I decided to visit the borderpoles 30, 31 and 32 as well on my own. They were easy to reach, just by crossing this meadow.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 030
It looked easier as it was. There were some bushes and high weeds between the meadow and this pair 030. I didn't want to come to close to the border so had to face the high vegetation and alle the horeseflies and musquituos to reach it.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 031
These ones were easier to reach. The open strip is covered by all kind of weets. I guess it's not that easy to keep the border clean.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 032
The last pictures I made in this area. Again the border follows a little creek from here.
Time to go.
III-1 20140407 The road
I wanted to spend enough time to get my LT-BY permission and to visit the tripoint LV-BY-LT so I decided not to visit any small parts of the LV-BY border. I was a little behind of my scheme and that could save some time.
After all I was glad I did that, it took much time to get the permission and after that I had enough time for the rest of the schedule. It took me almost 4 hours to drive to Visaginas. Many sandy and dusty roads...
