Lithuania - Belarus II

I arrived at the point where I started, the old border crossing near Tilžė. Now I hiked until the lake Drūkšiai. It was getting late, so I had to hurry up a bit before it got dark. Besides that I had a long drive to the Polish - Lituanian border.

III-1 20140407 Old border crossing between Tilžė and Карасіна.
I don't know when, but once this was a border crossing. It must have been in the time when you didn't need any permission to cross the border between Lithuania and Belarus. Now the border is closed by a simple fence. The road is blocked already before: about hundred meters before the border there is a deep didge to avoid traffic to aproach the border.
The sign '22' which refers to the kilometrage on the road must be from ancient times...
III-1 20140407 Bealrusian side
On the Belarusian side there is also a small fence. Opensteetmap and Google map still mention this bordercrossing road. Also in Tilžė there is a roadsign indicating this crossing.
There is only little remaining.
On the left there is the bordermarker pair 1791.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 1790
Just 50 meters from the last poles, I already found this pair. On the left there is the former bordercrossing.
III-1 20140407 Borderpole 1789/1
The last borderpole on land. This is a strange on: only one pole (with a subnumber) placed on the border. It contains the colours of the flags of Belarus (Red-green) and of Lithuania (Reg, green and yellow). On the Lithuanian side, the Lithuanian sign is placed. I wonder if on the Belarusian side, the Lithuanian sign is placed. Earlier I found such a borderpole near Salsininkai.
III-1 20140407 Borderpole 1789/1, close up
Clearly visible the yellow stripe. As there is no other border marker, I assume this pole is situated on the real border.
III-1 20140407 More duckboards
Now the most interesting part comes: the swamp at the edge of the Lake Druksiai starts. On the Lithuanian side there are duckboards along about 200 meters, maybe more. I had to be very careful not to step in one of the many gaps. These duckboards are old and badly maintained. On the Belarusian side there is no path or road. The real border is here not recognizable.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 1789
At the end of the duckboards the real lake starts. Here I found the borderpole pair 1789. I also noticed a Belarusian dummy on a kind of stairs, looking over the lake. Very surprising!
On the Belarusian side, there are also some duckboards leading to the puppet.
Borderpole 1788/1
When I had a closer look at the situation, I noticed the borderpole 1788/1, which is about 30 meters from the pair 1789. This must be the first pole on the northern side of the lake. The strange thing is: I can not follow the line of the border from 1788/1 to 1789. On the previous picture it looks like the border only makes a small angle, like indicated on the map on the top of this page. In that case the pole 1788/1 stands in Belarus and not on the border. I can not imagine that. Moreover, in that case the puppet and the Belarusian borderpole would be placed in Lithuanian soil.
The only thing I can imagine, that there is a pole 1788/2 somewhere closer to the lake and that the border makes some strange angels. But I can't find anything about it on any map.
III-1 20140407 Borderpoles 1788/1
I used a telelens from the duckboards on the Lithuanian side to get it on the picture, so it looks closer that it is in reality. You can read the number clearly 1788/1.
Another funny thing is: this pole has only the Belarusian colours (red, green). It suggests there would also be a Lithuanian sepcies, but where? All the vegetation doesn't make it easy to find any poles now. And I don't want to get drowned or caught on Belarusian soil. You never know if the puppet comes to life...
III-1 20140407 Lake Druksiai
A look at the lake Druksiai. It was very hot and a bit cloudy so it didn't look very special. Notice the borderpole in the water. Maybe that is the 1788/2 ?
III-1 20140407 Belarusian puppet
Time to say goodbye to my Belarusian friend who is still looking over the lake, day and night. I hiked back to the car for a 4 hours' drive to Szypliszki in Poland near the Lithuanian border. Tomorrow another very long day...
